The Samsung Chromebook Plus notebook experience is the best today!

[Summary] If you're planning to buy a Chromebook, Chromebook Plus is by far the perfect choice, despite the imperfections in Android apps support and stylus experience.

The Verge Chinese Station reported on February 13

Let me tell you first when I fell in love with Samsung's Chromebook Plus.

I was reading an e-book at the time and wanted to save it. So I used the screen capture button in the auto pop-up menu, and then used Google Keep's annotation feature to do some markup on the page, as it did in a regular book, and to continue the original progress in the future.

Later, I couldn't remember where I was referring to, so I opened up Google Keep and conducted a simple search. I immediately found the location I had previously marked (Google has automatically uploaded my progress to the cloud), and positioned it fairly. accurate. Instead, I only need to use the "Grab Image Text" feature, and at the same time, I can copy and paste the content from Google Docs now.

Actually, for me, there wasn't much technology before that made me feel “magic”. Of course, it was integrated as a tablet, Chromebook, stylus, Android application, desktop browser and keyboard. Together, Chromebook Plus makes me feel amazing.

Samsung's Chromebook Plus is a new generation of Chrome OS system notebooks, will be officially launched next week, priced at 449 US dollars (about 3087 yuan). This is one of the two Chromebooks that Samsung released in the first half of this year, and the other is the Chromebook Pro, which will be available in April. With a more powerful Intel processor, the price is still more expensive than 100 US dollars.

These two Chromebooks are of great significance to the entire Chrome system notebook market. First of all, they are the first new version of Chromebook products, fully support the operation of Android applications, and better support the use of tablet mode, and support stylus touch operation, while having a complete desktop-level Web browser and application experience. Basically taking all of these features out is far better than the low-end Windows laptop in the entire education field. It is even possible to convince some iPad and Mac users to switch to their own arms.

If you make a summary of Chromebook Plus, it is "very good." From many perspectives, this conclusion is very accurate. Although on the whole, the Chrome OS system still has a long way to go, but the current progress is very obvious. The support for Android applications has also accelerated the pace of faster product adoption.

Although the price of Chromebook Plus is relatively expensive in the field of Chromebooks, its performance proves its value for money. Metal body, excellent workmanship, beautiful design, high-resolution display and top brightness, plus a screen hinge that can be flipped at any angle, allows the Chromebook Plus to switch between notebook and tablet modes.

In fact, strictly speaking, Chromebook Plus is not a too high value of the product, and even a bit ordinary. The notebook is rounded around and looks like a slim "sandwich" in its closed state. Maybe Chromebook Plus won't win any design awards, but it looks simple and elegant.

Since it is a Chromebook, then naturally will not impress you with stunning design, but in the basic design language, Chromebook Plus is more excellent, thin and light overall body shape, can be considered a product does not deduct points.

My biggest complaint about Chromebook Plus comes from the keyboard, although the input feels good, but there is no backlight. Chromebook Plus is not cheap on the price, so as a high-end Chromebook, there should be some distinctions compared to ordinary Chromebook. In addition, the trackpad of the Chromebook Plus is also a bit small, but the response and operation accuracy is fairly good.

Another important aspect of the Chromebook Plus that distinguishes it from other Chromebooks is the stylus. You will find that the Chromebook Plus stylus does not differ much from the Galaxy Note S Pen, except that it does not have a button. Google said that the use of stylus pens on Chromebooks is not exclusive to Samsung, so this year we will see more vendors offering Chromebook products that support stylus pens.

If you measure with the average Chromebook standard, the performance of Chromebook Plus will seriously exceed your expectations. The Chromebook Plus is equipped with an ARM processor that can easily handle browser tasks with more than six tags. In the course of my testing, I opened up to 9 tags at the same time, some of which are web applications with a certain intensity, but Chromebook Plus does not have any sluggishness.

After I have experienced the Chromebook Plus, I will tell you that it is worthwhile to spend so much money to buy a Chromebook with an ARM processor. Although before this, this is still a difficult problem.

If you're interested in Chromebook Plus, the biggest question now is whether it's worth the extra $100 to upgrade your Intel processor. But for me, this is not recommended. Although the more expensive Chromebook Pro is faster and can handle more web tasks, basically Chromebook Plus can already meet the needs of ordinary users. I think for most people, the Chromebook Plus is good enough.

I am very satisfied with the performance of Chromebook Plus. In the test I used a circular webpage and the Chromebook Plus lasted eight and a half hours. In actual use, I have opened a relatively high burden of web applications and the browser is still open, although Chromebook Plus is not the product I have tested for the longest life, but at least in the near future is a very good performance, especially with Apple Compared to the new MacBook Pro.

The Chromebook Plus comes with two USB Type-C connectors that can be used not only for charging but also for connecting an external monitor. In addition Chromebook Plus also comes with a microSD card slot, if the built-in 32GB storage space is not enough, you can also expand on your own.

These are all impressive places for Chromebook Plus. This is a product that Google and Samsung have worked together to create. Although not a big surprise, it is a very good product. It can be said that the Chromebook Plus is by far the best Chromebook notebook I have ever seen.

However, Chromebook Plus is not perfect, for example, in the tablet mode, Google does not seem to be fully considered, so the experience is not very good. When I flip to tablet mode, all the content becomes full screen directly, but there is no option window or separate sidebar. If you want to launch full-screen mode, I'm sorry to either press the power button to lock the screen and activate it, or wait for 40 seconds to turn it off automatically.

However, since Google regularly updates and upgrades the Chrome system, these issues should be resolved one by one over time. In addition, I'm not sure whether the consistency of Android applications in the Chrome OS system is consistent with the Android platform itself.

In addition to stylus, although this is a good idea, it is not mature at present. But at the moment, Google has done a very clever thing, that is, through the pop-up menu to achieve the main operation of the stylus. In tablet mode, the stylus will pop up small icons after touching the screen, and it works well with many web applications. However, most of the applications should be used under the Android interface. In the future, Google will optimize the stylus pen to reduce the delay, and now the stylus operation on the screen will basically have a certain delay, and the underlying reason is that the current Android application is running under Chrome is still in a test phase. Therefore, it is not perfect.

The basic situation is that Android applications running on Chromebook Plus are based on the Marshmallow version, not the latest Nougat version. The actual use effect is that only a few Android applications can fit the layout of the Chrome system, including full-screen display. However, most of them are not the effects I want, but they cannot be adjusted. So running an Android application on Chromebook Plus is full of deep taste and a variety of imperfections.

There are also other problems with Android applications. Since most Android applications are designed for smart phone screens, they run on the Chromebook Plus's large screen and they don't work as smoothly. Although Google stated that it will work together with developers to solve this problem in the future, this was originally proposed on the Android tablet, and it has not been resolved for five or six years, and the Chrome OS system has become the last chance.

From the actual running effect point of view, running Android applications on the Chromebook Plus screen, from the pixel effect point of view, most of the Android applications are worse than my Google Pixel effect, basically with the iPad 2 is a level. In addition, many Android devices have crashed, basically once a day. Although testing is an excuse, it will be resolved sooner or later. In addition, the Intel Chromebook Pro is the same problem.

Even more mature applications like Kindle or Netflix are less stable on Chromebook Plus. So at present, the large screen of Chromebook Plus is still not suitable for running Android applications.

So how should we evaluate this Samsung Chromebook Plus?

If compared with the red flag Chromebook R11 or Dell Chromebook 13, Samsung Chromebook Plus is an outstanding device. As long as you are willing to spend more money, then Chromebook Plus can bring you beautiful screen effects and hardware work. Of course, the price of the Chromebook Plus is not as high as that of a Windows laptop with the same experience. In Chromebook, Chromebook Plus is a great product.

But obviously Chromebook Plus is not enough to carry Google's ambitions, especially Android applications and stylus has not yet supported very well.

If you just need a tablet, then choosing iPad is a more mature decision. But if you were planning to buy a Chromebook, then Chromebook Plus is by far the perfect choice. (Author: Dieter Bohn compilation: Human)
