Google's Transfer Appliance allows companies to transfer data stored in private data centers to secure machines and then to Google Cloud Platform.

With the Transfer Appliance, companies can transmit the same amount of data in a matter of weeks.

The Transfer Appliance is Google’s mobile storage device to respond to Amazon’s cloud service Amazon Web Services’ (AWS)’s deliverable storage, Snowball. AWS launched the first version of its 50TB storage device, Snowball, in 2015, which customers can use to transfer data to the Amazon cloud. Since then, AWS has also launched 80TB Snowball and 100TB Snowball Edge, which also provide powerful computing power. For those companies with huge amounts of data, AWS’s Snowmobile allows them to transfer 100 petabytes of data from the data center to the cloud each time, mainly with large trucks full of hard drives.

Operating engineers can install Transfer Appliances on a standard 19-inch-wide rack in the data center, side-by-side with other servers. Google offers two models: 100TB version needs to occupy 1 rack unit, and 480TB version needs to occupy 4 rack units. After compression, the average user needs 200TB to meet the demand. With a smaller model priced at $300 plus shipping, Google expects a round trip of about $500. The larger model costs $1800, plus about $900 for shipping. These services will initially only be launched in the United States.

Dave Nettleton, product manager of Google Cloud Storage Group, points out that there are many uses for Transfer Appliances. Enterprises can transfer data from internal data centers to the public cloud, or iteratively process batches of local data before analyzing it in the cloud. It's hard to tell exactly how long it will take to fill each Transfer Appliance, because it's very much dependent on the configuration of the data center they are in.

The hard drive settings in the Transfer Appliances can withstand multiple failures, so the company will not lose data even if one or two drives are damaged. Companies concerned with data security should know that the information loaded on the Transfer Appliance is encrypted using a key.

Nettelton said: "All the data on the Transfer Appliances will be encrypted using AES-256 during the digestion process, and the keys will never be sent out and will not be stored on the Transfer Appliances, so they are all external to the device. The raw data in the Transfer Appliance is encrypted and stored, and once the data is uploaded to Google Cloud Storage, only the customer can decrypt it and we can't see the key.” When the Transfer Appliances are returned to Google, the company will wipe it.
