STMicroelectronics Introduces Vcom Voltage Calibration Chip

STMicroelectronics has introduced a programmable Vcom voltage calibration chip with an I2C serial port. The new product simplifies the voltage regulation process that eliminates screen flicker in the production of TFT (thin film transistor) liquid crystal display panels. When used in conjunction with ST's unique automatic flicker detection solution, the new STVM100 automates voltage regulation because mechanical potentiometers are no longer needed, which reduces labor costs while increasing product reliability.

Screen flicker is an inherent feature of TFT-LCD panels. To eliminate flicker, you need to adjust Vcom during the production process ('common voltage', which is about one-half of the analog supply voltage AVDD). If the Vcom voltage calibration chip STVM100 is designed into a TV set, the operator or automation program can directly adjust the common voltage through the I2C interface during the manufacturing process, eliminating the need for manual measurement adjustments using conventional potentiometers.

Once the ideal Vcom voltage setting parameters are found, this parameter can be saved in the EEPROM memory of the STVM100. This way, the system automatically calls the public voltage setting each time the TV is turned on. The advantages of EEPROM support for reprogramming provide display manufacturers with high production flexibility, they can adjust the display's common voltage as many times as possible.

The chip's common voltage is adjusted by a total of 128 steps, and the highest and lowest voltage values are determined by three external resistors. The new product is available now in volume quantities in an 8-pin 3 x 3mm TDFN8 package or a 3 x 3mm TSSOP8 package, priced at $1.09 each. Reading era
