Sharp hints that the iPhone 8 or OLED display plans to start production of 568 million US dollars

According to the "Nihon Keizai Shimbun" report, Sharp CEO Dai Zhengwu's remarks on Saturday may confirm the rumor that the next generation iPhone will adopt OLED screens.

Dai Zhengwu recently received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, Datong University, Taiwan. At the degree award ceremony, Dai Zhengwu told the students: "The iPhone is constantly improving. Now it will abandon the LTPS screen and turn to the OLED screen. I can't predict whether Apple's OLED screen iPhone will be a big success, but if Apple doesn't Going this way, without making a change, it will lose an opportunity for innovation. This is a crisis and an opportunity."

Sharp hints that the iPhone 8 or OLED display plans to start production of 568 million US dollars

Sharp is Apple's iPhone display supplier, and Dai Zhengwu is also the executive of Sharp Sharp's parent company Foxconn. Therefore, his words are highly credible.

In the fiscal year ending September of this year, Apple's revenue declined for the first time since 2001, due to the lack of innovation and weak demand for the iPhone. Compared to LTPS screens, OLED screens have higher color contrast and manufacturers can produce flexible, collapsible screens. Sharp has already supplied LTPS screens to Apple, but its OLED capacity is limited.

Dai Zhengwu also said that Sharp is building a new OLED factory in Japan, and if necessary, will set up an OLED screen in the United States.

He said: "If our key customers ask us to produce products in the US, may we not do that?"

Dai Zhengwu did not determine when the possible OLED screen iPhone will be available. His remarks may be just a response to the rumors that began last year.

Industry insiders expect Apple to launch an iPhone with a flexible OLED screen and a unique "glass sandwich" design in 2017. In June this year, it was reported that Samsung and Sharp planned to mass-produce OLED screens by the end of 2017. The two companies may have received large orders from Apple.

Just last month, Sharp announced plans to invest $568 million in its OLED business, all of which will be available in the second quarter of 2018 as soon as possible.
