Ericsson tests 4G / LTE to achieve high-speed seamless transmission

Is it possible for 4G / LTE to maintain a network connection on jets up to 700 kilometers per hour? Ericsson has brought LTE testing to the sky. Experiments have shown that the powerful and reliable 4G / LTE can indeed not hinder high-speed travel, and it is still unobstructed!

Two Ericsson engineers took the Saab jet airliner, carrying a PC equipped with an LTE network card, took off from Sweden Linkoping, and flew along the regular route. When the aircraft was near Vastervik and 300 meters above the ground, measurements were taken to assess the impact of the Doppler effect, switching performance, and the stability of the audio and video stream. Test results show that when the aircraft is flying at 700 kilometers per hour, the PC can connect to the network at a maximum downlink speed of 19Mbps through 4G / LTE. According to this transmission speed, a 2MB photo can be downloaded in less than a second.

Ericsson's inspiration for this test came from the high-speed rail. At present, high-speed railways around the world are developing rapidly. Consumers expect to have uninterrupted network connections when riding high-speed rail. Ericsson must ensure that the network equipment it provides can meet this requirement.

Determining how fast the user can be, the Doppler effect test with a straight line approaching or away from the LTE wireless base station is also achieved. When the aircraft approaches the wireless base station in a straight line at a speed of more than 600 kilometers per hour, the network can still maintain a connection; and when flying at a speed of 500 kilometers per hour, the seamless switching between the two wireless base stations can be completed and used to monitor the network The audio and video streaming of the stability of the road connection has not been subject to any obvious interference.

Ola Melander, senior project manager of Ericsson R & D, explained that this experiment is a normal task of Ericsson system testing. It is a 4G test conducted on a jet aircraft flying at high speed and low altitude. It uses an existing commercial network and does not target extreme environmental conditions in advance. Make special modifications. The results prove that Ericsson's wireless and core network products are very reliable, and the excellent LTE performance obtained during the test is exciting.
