American University develops magnetic ink equipment that can repair itself

Robotic pie makers, light bulbs that can charge mobile phones... Silicon Valley is always ingenious and provides us with all kinds of strange products, although we haven’t even figured out whether we need it or not. Although the product is cool, it cannot withstand the test of time and is easily damaged. The startup company cannot solve this problem.

Recently, a research and development team at the University of California Engineering Laboratory has developed a new technology that is expected to solve this problem. It has developed magnetic ink particles that can be automatically repaired when the equipment is damaged. For example, if the sensor is made of magnetic ink particles, the sensor can heal automatically when there is a crack.

Research team member Amay Bandodkar said: “Human skin can be extended and it can be repaired automatically. Similarly, we hope to bring repair power to printed electronics products.”

The research report focuses on one key point: the development of sensors that contain fabrics. The results show that if smart clothes are made from new materials, the tearing of the clothes is less than 3 mm long and it can be repaired within 50 milliseconds. In the demo video, the sensor used to light the small light bulb splits in half. In a matter of seconds, the magnetic force connects the two pieces together and the slow light comes on again.

In order to create "self-repair" capabilities, the team used neodymium magnet powder, which was used in refrigerators and hard drives, and the researchers mixed it with ink. If according to traditional methods, chemical treatment and heating are required first, the production process takes several hours to complete; mixing with ink can eliminate this step.

According to estimates, $10 worth of ink can make hundreds of small devices, helping to reduce waste, because when wearables and other small devices break, we don't have to throw it away. Within seconds, the device can repair itself and it can be used again.

The team is currently studying the best ratio of ink in different printing products. In the future, the team's goal is to use ink to make various devices, such as solar panels and medical embedded products. It may not take long for new technologies to be used in everyday products.
