NFC smartphones are strong: shipments this year will reach 416 million, 2018 or 1.2 billion

According to a report released by IHS, a market research organization, this year, shipments of NFC (Near Field Communication)-enabled smartphones will reach 416 million units, and shipments will grow rapidly, and will continue to surge in the next few years. It is expected that in 2018, four years later, NFC smartphone shipments are expected to reach 1.2 billion units.

The report said that NFC smartphone shipments will reach 416 million units this year and increase to 1.2 billion in 2018.

According to the IHS report, shipments of smartphones equipped with NFC wireless technology in 2012 were 120 million units, and in 2013, shipments reached 275 million units, an increase of 128% over 2012. The report predicts that its shipments are expected to reach 416 million units in 2014, up 50% from 2013. By 2018, its shipments are expected to reach 1.2 billion units, up 325% from 2013 shipments.

The report shows that in the NFC mobile phone market in 2013, Android smartphone shipments were about 254 million units, accounting for 93% of the total, which is the absolute mainstream of the market. It is estimated that by 2018, Android smartphone shipments will reach 844 million units, and its market share will fall to 75%, which is related to the increase in the share of other manufacturers' NFC smartphones. .

As can be seen from the report, more smartphones will support NFC in the next few years, but consumers have yet to show a strong interest in technology. Security may be a problem that restricts the development of NFC, but in general, the NFC industry is still fragmented due to the unique solutions provided by different vendors. Analysts believe that in order for NFC technology to win the favor of consumers and ultimately recognize it, technology companies must address consumer safety concerns and strive to make the technology more standardized.

Another reason why NFC failed to form a climate may be related to Apple's attitude. Apple has little interest in NFC technology, making its competitors, the Android camp smartphone maker, a dominant player in the NFC technology market. Although an NFC-enabled iPhone will inspire consumer interest, Apple typically sneaks into the market before a technology becomes mainstream.

NFC is well known as a way to purchase wireless payment products, but as a wireless technology, its application can be extended to data sharing between other transactions and devices. Therefore, in the future, NFC technology may stimulate the interest of more consumers in other ways. The IHS report believes that there are still many challenges before NFC technology is adopted on a large scale, but these challenges will be gradually resolved.

HS market analyst Don Tait said in a statement, "In fact, most smartphone manufacturers are using NFC as their product's wireless communication and payment support technology. Consumers are increasingly aware of mobile payments. The benefits of NFC technology have spread to global companies. This strong development of NFC technology will enable it to overcome many obstacles, including the lack of convincing services and applications, and the slow progress in building the required infrastructure. ”
