New smart wristband: one gesture can control smart appliances

Home automation is a hot topic in the technology industry.

Apple recently launched the new smart home platform HomeKit. At this year's International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), some companies launched a number of home appliances that can be accused of using smartphones.

Playtabase is a startup founded in 2012 by students from the University of Minnesota. The company recently introduced a distinctive smart home control approach.

Smart wrist

The smart home control center developed by Playtabase is a smart wristband called Reemo. Reemo users don't need to pull out their smartphones, they can control their home devices with a simple pointing gesture.

Playtabase is not the only company that develops home automation gesture control technology. At the Consumer Electronics Show in January, PointGrab introduced PointSwitch, a camera-based gesture solution. Thalmic Labs' smart armband Myoarmband allows users to control their home appliances with Jedi-like gestures.

However, there are also some smart home solutions that are not very practical. Many times, users need to repeat the same gesture multiple times to execute a command.

Playtabase claims that Reemo is different.

“This is a product that my 85-year-old grandmother is also easy to wear and use.” Muhammad, CEO of Playtabase? Muhammad Abdurrahman said in an interview with BI.

Reemo sounds simple. It controls a variety of home appliances through a smart plug-in that communicates wristbands and home appliances.

Once the user connects the wristband to the smart card, the home appliance can be controlled with a simple pointing gesture. For example, if you want to open a coffee maker, just point your finger at the coffee pot and wave your hand as if you are telling someone to "here here."

"We strive to make the gestures we set simple and easy to remember," Abdul Rahman said.

Reemo is also suitable for "smart" appliances and conventional appliances. Users only need to install a smart plug-in to drive multiple devices. Reemo comes with a square-sized air receiver that you can attach to any connected appliance so you can control them with your wristband. These receivers can receive signals from your wristband and smart plug-in and explain your gestures.

The company will launch a financing campaign on the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo this week, hoping to raise $50,000 for Reemo. Recently, the company also joined Microsoft's Ventures Accelerator.

Reemo's early target customers were not professional technicians. Abdul Rahman said that the purpose of developing Reemo is to help older people control home devices more easily.

"It is very simple," Abdul Rahman said. "It only requires people to use simple pointing gestures, and this control is unprecedented."
