New developments in bird-like robots: solar energy charging

Professor SKGupta and Hugh Bruck recently led students to showcase their newly built solar-powered bird-like robot, the Mechanical Raven III Micro Air Vehicle (MAV), at the Maryland Robot Center. The wings of the robot use a thin solar cell that provides about 10% of its energy. When the bird is stationary, the battery can be charged for its next flight.

According to Professor Gupta, the team was originally designed to develop a robot that can continue its long flight mission. Because the machine raven's wings are large enough, it is suitable for solar cell layout. So the team put a folding solar cell on its wings to receive solar energy to power the flight. "This new design may change the future of the bird-like robot. With the help of solar cells, the robot will be able to fly farther and be more independent," said one team member.

The flexible solar cell materials used this time are very different from those used in previous versions of the Raven. The team will design new wings and inlays for it.

“Despite the limitations of battery efficiency and the difficulty of battery arrangement on the fins, Robot Raven No. 3 still needs to be improved to a considerable extent.” Professor Gupta said, “The good news is that it can indeed rely on solar energy. We believe , has taken the first step, how to improve efficiency to make birds fly farther is relatively simple."

Professor Gupta has been working on the wing-wing robot for nearly a decade. In 2007, he and his team showed their first flapping bird-like robot. This spring, they continued to introduce the Mechanical Raven Micro Air Vehicle (MAV), the first aircraft to be designed with independent program-controlled flapping wings.
